AMZ Advisers Bought Reach. Three Weeks Later, Chief Media Bought Them Both

On July 27, AMZ Advisers announced that it had acquired a stake in Reach Social Commerce.

The logic was compelling. AMZ had managed more than 500 brands on Amazon. Reach had generated over $30 million through TikTok Shop. Together, they could connect the platform where products are discovered with the marketplace where millions of customers go to buy.

AMZ presented it as the beginning of its next growth phase.

Then, 21 days later, Chief Media announced that it had acquired AMZ Advisers and its stake in Reach.

Clearly, Chief did not discover AMZ on July 27 and complete an acquisition three weeks later. The two companies must already have been deep in negotiations when AMZ announced the Reach deal.

But there was another hidden timeline.

Mike Begg, CEO of AMZ Advisers, later said the Reach transaction had actually happened around ten months before the Chief acquisition. The July announcement was therefore describing an acquisition completed months earlier.

The release itself gives the game away. Despite being published in July 2026, it says AMZ planned to develop the combined offer “through the remainder of 2025 and into 2026.”

It appears to have been written much earlier and held back.

The acquisition that created the exit

AMZ bought Reach because its Amazon clients were asking for help with TikTok Shop.

Building that capability internally would have meant hiring a new team, developing creator relationships and spending months proving it could generate sales rather than just views.

Buying Reach solved the problem immediately.

Reach already had the team, systems and results. AMZ could sell TikTok services to its Amazon clients, while Reach could introduce Amazon services to its social-commerce clients.

It also transformed AMZ from an Amazon specialist into a much broader commerce platform.

That is precisely what made it more valuable to Chief Media.

Chief already understood paid media, data and attribution. What it lacked was proven expertise inside Amazon and TikTok Shop.

Rather than build those capabilities, it bought them.

The same logic therefore powered both transactions. AMZ bought Reach because acquiring TikTok expertise was faster than building it. Chief then bought AMZ and Reach because acquiring both Amazon and TikTok expertise was faster than building either.

As Begg put it: “Cross-sell capability is faster to buy than to build. I know that because I did it. Now I’ve watched it done to me.”

The cheek of the announcement

What makes the story particularly good is how AMZ presented the Reach acquisition.

It said the combined business would pursue ambitious growth across both marketplaces. It talked about introducing the service to more clients and building a coordinated offering under one roof.

Begg had even recently posted that he was looking for more ecommerce agencies to acquire.

AMZ appeared to be building an independent agency group.

In reality, it was almost certainly already preparing to join somebody else’s.

That does not mean the Reach acquisition was engineered solely for the Chief sale. There is no public evidence of that. But it undoubtedly improved the proposition Chief was buying.

Reach gave AMZ a faster-growing capability, an immediate cross-sell story and ownership of more of the customer journey.

The lesson is not simply “buy other agencies.”

It is to buy the missing capability that changes how a larger buyer values your business.

AMZ bought Reach and became more than an Amazon agency.

Chief saw the combined platform and bought the lot.

All AMZ needed was 21 days between announcing the first deal and revealing the bigger one.
